Aug 31-Sept 6 Mayor supports Kiwanis Peanut Day. Mayor Michael Guido came to Comcast studios to help Dearborn Kiwanis' annual fund raiser. Kiwani hosts Frank Bewick and this year's "big goober" Mark Copper review Kiwanis support of Dearborn community activities with the mayor. Conversation was spiced by repartee between Mayor Guido and long time local political columnist Bewick.
Sept 7-13 Inside the Times Herald. Mike and Scott Bewick, publisher and editor of the Times Herald, discuss the newspaper business with host Gary Gardner. Beginning with Mike's first days working on the paper in the late sixties, the three traced the technical changes in newspaper publishing to the current computerized age. Despite electronic media, the Bewicks say there is a bright future for newsprint with locally oriented and in-depth reporting.
Sept 14-20 Rock Financial and Dearborn. Tim Briody of Rock Financial reviewed Rock Financial Deaborn community activities with Kiwanis hosts Jeanette Christe, also of Rock Financial, and Ray Scoboria. Events include an auction and local business expo scheduled for September 20 at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Deaborn. Undeterred by ominous recent news about the housing market, Mr Briody exuded optimism about home buying. Both he and Ms Christe noted the wealth of new mortgage products available to todays prospective home buyer.
Sept 21-27 Dearborn economic development Barry Murray, director of the Economic and Community Development Department for the City of Dearborn, paid another visit to Kiwanitalk this month. Paid parking and the Montgomery Ward property were the hot button topics, of course, but Mr Murray used a much broader brush to paint the current scene in Deaborn. Mr Murray and host Gary Gardner discussed how "life-style" centers arise and coalesce, both in urban and suburban settings, and how such centers might evolve in east Dearborn along Schaefer and in west Dearborn around the former Jacobson's department store.
The Kiwanians come in later, setting up props and adjusting the cameras and mikes. Jane types in names and affiliations. Frank and Anne check to see that guests are accounted for and welcomed. At Ken's signal cameras roll and guests are interviewed.
Despite the need to stay focused, hijinks break out now and then as the Kiwanians are friends as well as crew.
Here Ken prepares for a taping session with host Skip Armstrong and guest David Coram.
Apprentice cameraperson Christina runs "Camera 1" and cues the host.
Jane (with Anne and Ken behind) provides all the titles and credits that appear on screen.
Gary helps mike a KiwaniTalk guest.
Kiwanian Al "Babydoll" Holmes at his camera and ready to roll.
Kiwanian Skip "Roll 'em Mr Dale" Armstrong, long time KiwaniTalk participant, on the set assisting with mics and other preparations.
Kiwanian Leon "Crooked River" Bergeron pulls a shift on the camera. Because of his long reach, he is also the most looked-for crew member when it comes time to tear down the set.
Young Christie Christe refused camera duty, so her mother, Kiwanian Jeanette Christe, fills in this month.
