August 3-9: Your City Government. Dearborn City Councilman Mark Shooshanian and host Frank Bewick take the grand tour of city and, indeed, regional issues. In particular, the two take up issues addressed last month by Councilman Doug Thomas and Gary Gardner. Mr. Shooshanian observed that it would be very hard to attract viable retail businesses to Dearborn in part because Dearborn lacks the space available to, say, neighboring Allen Park and in part because so many people are turning to the internet to do their shopping!
August 10-23: New President, Henry Ford Community College. Dr. Gail Mee speaks to host Gary Gardner about her new position as president of Henry Ford Community College. President Mee comes to Dearborn from New York via Arizona. She is especially happy to return to an area with green grass and beautiful flowers. More to the point, she is keen on the special role the community college plays in the educational system, how it provides a quality affordable education for local students, how it provides a second chance for the disadvantaged, how it provides a constant resource of skills and pleasures for life-long learners.
August 24-30: D.O.V.E. John Craven and host Ray Scoboria, both veterans of the Vietnam War discuss the DOVE fund, of which Mr. Craven is a trustee. As a vet, Mr. Craven views the fund (Development of Vietnam Endeavors) as a second opportunity to help the people of Vietnam. Since its inception in 2000, DOVE has raised nearly $1 million. It has built over 20 schools as well as funded improved water supply, scholarships and micro finance loans for grass roots small businesses. More information about the DOVE Fund may be found at their website www.dovefund.org.
