June 29-July 5: Dearborn Councilman Doug Thomas, fellow Kiwanian and perennial administration gadfly engaged in lively conversation with host Gary Gardner. Thomas recounted some of his political background in Dearborn going back to the days of Mayor Orville Hubbard then launched into a critique of what he called the current administration's complacency, especially as it pertains to the economic viability of Dearborn and the surrounding area.
July 6-12: Lively, articulate State Senator Irma Clark-Coleman chatted with Kiwanitalk founder Frank Bewick for this week's installment. Clark-Coleman reviewed her progression from school board to the Michigan House and then to the Michigan Senate, praised Govenor Granholm for protecting children and seniors during difficult fiscal times in Lansing, and reviewed bills she has introduced in the legislature. She supports extending the kindergarten day, making kindergarten attendance mandatory and raising the age at which students may drop out from school.
July 13-19: David Coram and the "Cruisin'Telegraph" Committee are gearing up for the second go around of the Telegraph Cruise on July 29, 2006. Coram described this year's plans to host Skip Armstrong and showed video from last year's inaugural cruise. Coram brought in hats and t-shirts with this year's designs. He directed people wanting more details about the cruise to cruzintelegraph.com.
July 20-27: Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Brian Zahra returned to Kiwanitalk studios for an interview with host and lawyer Gary Gardner. Judge Zahra, who is a member of Dearborn Heights Kiwanis, discussed the adjustments he had to make upon moving to the appeals court. In particular, he spends a great deal more time reading and writing than when he was a judge in the Wayne Circuit Court inducing him to give up recreational reading in favor of more physical activities like hockey. He also took time to explain some of the thorny legal issues that he has worked on, revealing his enthusiasm for legal scholarship.
July 28-August 3: Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm came to the offices of the Dearborn Times Herald for this special KiwaniTalk edition. This is a rebroadcast of our May show, but the issues discussed then remain relevant to area residents. Besides if the governor came to visit Kiwanitalk, we're going to flaunt it!
